Two caps, one minimum

eBay's uploader has two hard caps: 12 MB per file and 24 photos per listing, plus the 500 px longest-side minimum from the picture policy. Most upload problems come from the file-size cap — raw camera exports or high-bitmap screenshots easily pass 12 MB. This checker reports your file's size in MB and its pixel dimensions the moment you drop it. For files over the cap, re-export as JPEG at quality 80–90; a 1600 px product photo usually compresses to 1–2 MB, well under the limit and far easier for buyers on mobile to load.

Stay under the caps without losing quality

The 24-photo cap and the 12 MB per-file cap work together in the listing form: the uploader accepts up to 24 files, and each file must be 12 MB or less. In practice the 12 MB limit rarely binds modern camera exports — phone photos usually land between 2 and 6 MB — but high-bitmap PNG screenshots and uncompressed TIFFs blow past it quickly. When a file exceeds the cap, the listing form rejects it rather than compressing it, so check the file-size row before you start filling in the listing. If you routinely sell items that need many photos, standardize on 1600 px JPEG at quality 80–90 and you will never think about the cap again.

Common questions

What is eBay's photo size limit in MB?

Each photo can be up to 12 MB. The practical target is far lower — a 1600 px JPEG export usually lands under 2 MB and uploads quickly.

How many photos can an eBay listing have?

Up to 24 photos per listing. You must include at least one photo, and the first one you add becomes the main photo shown in search results.

Why is my eBay photo not uploading?

The most common causes are files over 12 MB, unsupported formats, or photos below 500 pixels on the longest side. Check each with a size tool before uploading.

What image formats does eBay support?

eBay's uploader accepts common image formats including JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP and TIFF. JPG/JPEG is the safest choice for photos.

Does file size affect photo quality on eBay?

Not directly — quality is set by pixel resolution and compression. A heavily compressed 100 KB JPEG at 1600 px looks worse than a 1 MB one, so keep quality around 80–90 when exporting.
